 History

The first singing group organized under the pastorate of the late James H. Saunders, at the Bethany church was the Senior Choir.  With just a few members the Senior Choir sang praises to God and ministered to the hearts of people through song every first, third and fourth Sunday of each month.

Mrs. Jesuda Smith was the first organist and Mrs. Geraldine Saunders-Briggs was the first president.  Some of the other former organists were Mr. John Madison, Mrs. Margaret Knight, Mr. Donald Dillard, Mr. Herbert Spence, Mrs. Mabel Turner, Mr. Robert Habershaw, Mrs. Claudine Clark-Hicks, Mrs. Helen Jenkins, Mrs. Betty King, Mrs. Helene Griffin, Mrs. Ruth Moore (assistant organist), Mr. John Edwards, Mr. William Hunter, Mr. William Byrd and Mr. Wilbert McCabe.

In 1980, the late Mrs. Alice Crawford Gaskins became the Organist-Directress of the Senior Choir and served faithfully in this position.  The late Thelma Turner took on the position as organist and was also a faithful servant.  In September 2010 Mr. Michael Fortson took on the position as Organist-Director and continues to serve faithfully just as his predecessors.
