Established  March 11, 1942

Purpose/Mission Statement:  Pastor Emeritus Alpheus L. Bright conceptualized the “Adopt-A-Senior Ministry” in the early months of the year 2000.  His desire in establishing this Ministry was to have Bethany members, 60 years of age and older, consistently acknowledged and shown expressions of appreciation for their dedication to Kingdom Building through their membership at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church.

Scripture:  Matthew 25:40 “In as much as ye have done it unto the last of these, my brethren, you have done it unto me.”

Meeting Day/Time/ Location: The Adopt-A-Senior Ministry meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall

 History

Rev. Bright requested that Mrs. Valerie Cook-Henry, Deaconess Glory Solomon, and Ms. Kimberly D. Williams assist him in making this long-time desire come to fruition.

Therefore, on March 12, 2000, the three referenced ladies submitted a proposal entitle “Valuing Bethany Seniors” to Rev. Bright.  The proposal consisted of a plan to haveBethanymembers 60 years of age adopted by younger Bethany Members.  Initially, there was an effort to extend the adoptions across three generations.  Members under 18 years of age would pair with members 19 years of age and older to adopt aBethanyMember 60 years of age and older.

The goals of the Adopt-A-Senior Ministry are to:

  • Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee (Exodus 20:12)
  • Build lasting relationships between seniors and volunteers.
  • Show ongoing appreciation for seniors through various activities.
  • Provide fundamental assistance to seniors.
  • Serve as companions.
  • Celebrate our seniors’ accomplishments.
  • Hear their stories…Our History.

Over the past five years, and with the revitalizing support of Rev. Dr. Myron D. Barnes, Sr. immediately after his arrival, many seniors and volunteers have embraced the Adopt-A-Senior Ministry, and have established relationships that have been a blessing to them and to our church family. Some of the activities that have been coordinated and implemented by the Adopt-A-Senior Ministry are Everybody’s Birthday, Fellowshipping Hawaiian Style, The Captain’s Ball, and the Senior Prom.  Other activities include acknowledging Bethany’s seniors annually, on the 3rd Sunday in June (Senior Sunday), and serving meals to our seniors on the 1st Sunday of each month, with the exception of the summer months.

If anyone would like to become involved with the adoption aspect of the Adopt A Senior Ministry, they can see any member of the Ministry.  If you wish to become a member of the Adopt a Senior Ministry, just come to a meeting.  We would love to have you.
